Susana EnrÃquez Exhibition for the Award of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Fine Art was opened by Dr. Trevor Weeks and hosted by Miranda Lawry, senior lectures from the University of Newcastle to give the welcome to the artistic community of Newcastle, professors, students and distinguish visitors from Sydney and Canberra who travelled to Newcastle to be at this exhibition who was attended by around one hundred people.
About this exhibition the art critic from Newcastle Jill Stowell wrote:
“For Susana EnrÃquez painting is as spontaneous as breathing. Like the music that inspires so much of her work, colour and form exist for her as a continuum, whether she is painting on floating sheets of acetate or small square canvases.
Primary colours are equated with the main divisions of the orchestra. They form explosive blocks and veils of paint, equating perhaps less with the works of composers as distinctive as Bartok or Debussy than with the exciting dynamics of performance.
At the University of Newcastle until March 3, she also displays spools of paper bearing energetic black markings. The reference is obviously to the written score as much as a response to sound, another facet of a highly individual translation from one art form to another.
Few artists could simultaneously present a major exhibition as part of their candidature for a higher degree and a further selection of works showing in a commercial gallery. At Tighes Hill Gallery until March 13, Susana EnrÃquez is showing smaller, more atmospheric music-oriented canvases, also in her trademark blues, reds and yellows.â€
